Archery deer season is now open in Michigan, and that means the deer will be running. The state Office of Highway Safety Planning reminding drivers that October and November are also the months with the most vehicle-deer crashes. Agency spokesman John Ross has this advice for drivers.

“Make sure you’re buckled up, because that helps in the event of any crash,” Ross says. “Stay aware, stay awake, and if you see deer, don’t veer for them. That can make things worse. If a crash is unavoidable, you want to brake firmly, hold on to the steering wheel, try to bring your vehicle to a controlled stop, and don’t swerve.”

While vehicle-deer crashes are down 13% from 2009, over 40% of those crashes happen from October through the end of the year.
