News/Talk 94.9 WSJM and 98.3 The Coast are again teaming up with City Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning for the fifth annual Flush Out Cancer in downtown St. Joseph on Friday, October 11. Mike Ross of City Plumbing says it started through his friendship with the late Denise Bohn and a collaboration with The Coast. Ross says that happened after his mom was diagnosed with cancer. The proceeds go to Berrien County Cancer Services, and he personally took their money to them last year.

“To see the number of people that it impacts, it’s unbelievable,” Ross tells WSJM News. “I looked over the room and I couldn’t believe how many people were in there. For me, it was a hard hit when my mom got it, and then when we lost her.”

He calls the community response “awesome.”

“When we started our first year, Denise (Bohn) and I and Jonny (Reinhardt) and all of us here, we didn’t really know what we were getting in to. And we made like, $2,200 or something, and we were overwhelmed,” adds Ross.

Last year, the fundraiser brought in over $13,000. Ross says they have no dollar amount set for a goal, just to keep doing better every year. He adds it’s an “awesome day” to be a part of.

“Not only because you see people that come in and share their stories, but it’s a great day for those who are beginning the stages of going through something. If they have the courage to come out, there’s a lot of support here.”
