The Berrien County Parks Commission is expected to expand Paw Paw River County Park by 63 acres by the end of next summer thanks to a state grant. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board recommended the $80,000 grant for the county last week. It will be used to buy land next to the current 3.6 acre Paw Paw River County Park, possibly creating new opportunities for the protection of the environment, enhancement of the Paw Paw River Water Trail, hiking, bird watching, and limited hunting. Berrien County Parks Director Brian Bailey says the county is “very fortunate that the property owner is willing to work with us on the grant process and understands the importance of protecting river front property that is undeveloped for public use and enjoyment.” The grant recommended by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board still must be approved by the Michigan Legislature.
