State health officials are planning on a series of town hall meetings next year to discuss the opioid crisis. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson Lynn Sutfin says five people a day are dying from opioids in Michigan. She says they’re launching a multi-year campaign to cut opioid-related overdose deaths in half over the next five years.

“We’re going to be doing that by addressing three key areas,” said Sutfin. “Preventing opioid misuse, ensuring that individuals who are suffering from opioid use disorder have access to treatment, and then reducing the harm caused by opioids to individuals and their communities.”

Sutfin says the events will allow officials to present their 2020 strategy, and also get feedback from community members. Town halls will be held in Gaylord on July 24th, Escanaba on July 29th, Flint on September 25th, and Grand Rapids in November.
