Work is underway along the coast in St. Joseph to install limestone boulders to protect several homes between Lions Park Beach and Silver Beach County Park. As high waves crashed along the beach and eroded more sand on Monday, crews were racing against the water to put in the stone. The city and two homeowners reached an agreement in mid-December allowing them to move forward with placing long-term shore protection on city property along the shore, just south of Park Street and the same agreement was made available to other property owners in the area. The property owners are footing the bill for the shoreline protection. The city commission also directed staff to obtain designs and work to install coordinating shore protection at the ends of First, Second and Third streets. The designs in these locations are meant to preserve public access to Lake Michigan.
