A kayaker has died after being part of a group that had trouble on the St. Joseph River in Niles on New Year’s Day. Firefighters rescued two of the kayakers, and a third got himself out of the water. Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb says all were wearing life jackets. The fourth man, however, wasn’t able to get out of the river. Crews spent all morning starting around 8:30 looking for the man, and located him at 12:30 p.m. Niles Mayor Nick Shelton posted on Facebook just before 3 that the man had died. The victim’s name has not been released.
