Upgrades are coming to the electric grid in Berrien County. Indiana Michigan Power plans to invest around $62 million in the area over the course of this year to improve the reliability of the system. The Berrien Springs Area Improvements Project, as it’s being called, includes building the Blossom Trail Substation in Eau Claire, connecting that substation to existing lines, upgrading the transmission lines from 34.5 kiloVolts to 69 kiloVolts standards for better reliability, and replacing the Berrien Springs Substation with the new one in Berrien Springs. I&M is also planning to rebuild 4 miles of power line in four smaller segments, which might include re-routing some lines and getting new easements from property owners. Work will begin early this year.
