A Niles man found guilty in 1997 of the 1993 murder of his 15-year-old girlfriend has a chance at being free within the next year. Robert Leamon was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the crime, but because he was 16 when he killed Rebecca Stowe, his sentence was tossed out earlier this month due to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling. That decision found mandatory life sentences for juveniles is unconstitutional. Leamon’s new sentence was handed down Thursday of 25 to 60 years in prison, with credit for the 24 years, 3 months already served. That makes him parole-eligible this fall. If Leamon is not granted parole, he will be free in 2055.
