The Berrien County Health Department is hard at work staying on top of all the most recent novel coronavirus developments. Spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News they are constantly on calls with both state and federal officials. The department is also talking with locals about coronavirus, or Covid 19 as it’s now being called.

“Our job at this point is making sure that we’re staying on good contact with our local healthcare providers so that they have good information about what constitutes a Covid case and if someone were to present,” Conrad said.

Conrad says Covid 19 shares a lot of symptoms with the flu.

“As you can imagine, this might be adding to some of the concern with Covid 19 as we are in the middle of cold and flu season here in the United States.”

However, Conrad says the risk of getting Covid 19 remains low. She says those who are at risk are those who have traveled to areas where there’s been an outbreak, along with the people those travelers are in close contact with. She says person to person transmission remains low. Conrad also says there had only been about 55 cases in the United States as of Wednesday afternoon. She recommends everyone look at CDC.gov to get the best Covid 19 information.
