The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is urging everyone to fill out their census forms this year. A big push is being made statewide to get out the census message, and commissioners paused for a moment ahead of their Thursday meeting this week to do the same. Commissioner Bob Harrison told WSJM News population numbers collected through the census make a big difference in the community.

“The amount of funding from the federal government is based on the number of people living in the local area,” Harrison said. “A part of the initiative, not just here in Berrien County but statewide, is to make sure that everyone gets counted so that we have the maximum amount of outside money coming back to our community.”

The Berrien Community Foundation gave commissioners “Be Counted Berrien” shirts to pose in ahead of the meeting this week. Harrison told us the county is working with the foundation and putting posters up to get the census message out. He noted the U.S. Census Bureau protects everyone’s personal information, adding that filling out your census is “the right thing to do.”
