It’s now official – the city of South Haven will not have a Fourth of July fireworks show this year due to the elevation of Lake Michigan. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects the lake to rise another eight to ten inches by early July. City Manager Brian Dissette says several options were considered for other locations for firing off the pyrotechnics, but with the pier being the best spot, they simply can’t safely do it.

“Essentially we’re looking at what will likely be a pier that is at least partially submerged if not completely submerged,” explains Dissette.

Dissette was asked about the possibility of a cancellation at Monday’s city council meeting, and said a decision would be coming soon. He explained why they’re canceling the event four months ahead of time.

“We’re trying to get this news out at the very earliest opportunity so that local businesses, local residents, and guests have plenty of time to make their plans.”

An alternate date is under consideration between the city and the South Haven Visitors Bureau, but nothing has been set. Dissette said Monday night it might be New Year’s Eve.
