The Redskins name is going away in Paw Paw. The school board last night voted to retire the nickname at the end of this school year at the urging of superintendent Rick Reo.

“Even the most die-hard Redskins supporters admit that this change is inevitable,” said Reo. “Eventually we will have no choice in the matter and be forced to change.”

The vote to retire the nickname and logo was 6-1 Monday night. Three years ago, the board voted 4-3 to keep the name after several months of debate on the issue. Reo, who joined the district after that vote, is now asking to have a new identity chosen by the school board by the July meeting.
