Congressman Fred Upton has met with healthcare leaders in southwest Michigan to find out what they need as COVID-19 becomes more of a concern. He tells WSJM News he held a meeting in Kalamazoo on Friday to talk with hospital and public health experts. He says the big issue “is we’re not prepared with the number of testing kits that we’re going to want.”

“We want to make sure that the testing kits are being produced, and that they’re on the way and can be used for folks, particularly with a doctor’s advice, that believe that they may be infected with this so we can give them the best care,” Upton said.

Upton says he held the meeting at Western Michigan University to learn from health experts what resources they have, what resources they need, and to open direct lines of communication during the public health emergency. He also planned to introduce legislation this week that would require Medicare and Medicaid to allow remote screenings for patients.
