A scam is being reported around southern Berrien County that has resulted in some people being robbed. At this week’s meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Ezra Scott said the scam involves someone showing up at a resident’s door and claiming to work for a utility company. They then try to distract the homeowner.

“They get the person to go in, maybe go into their basement to show them the electric pane, and when they get them, a couple of individuals come into the house from the front or the backdoor, and they ransack and they rob,” Scott said.

Scott said social media warnings about these kinds of scams aren’t often seen by elderly residents because they’re not on social media. He asked commissioners to get the word out. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reported this week it handled a complaint about one of these scams in Union Pier. If you have not scheduled an appointment with workers or a utility, do not let them into your home. If such a person appears at your door, call the police. If they try to force their way in, call 911.
