Water shutoffs have been put on hold in the city of Benton Harbor. At a Monday meeting, the Benton Harbor City Commission unanimously voted to put a moratorium on shutoffs while the COVID-19 outbreak continues. Mayor Marcus Muhammad said it’s hard to say how long the moratorium will be in place.

“At this particular time…with restaurants closed, unemployment being extended, there’s no end in sight at this particular time.”

Commissioner Ron Singleton said the action is about protecting public health. Mayor Pro Tem Duane Seats said there should be a payment plan system in place for those residents who fall behind as Muhammad noted meters will continue to track usage. There is no payment plan system in place at this time, but the commission could discuss that later.
