Big changes are being made by Michigan’s largest grocery retailer. Meijer will no longer be open 24 hours starting Friday night for the length of the coronavirus pandemic. The chain, based in suburban Grand Rapids, will close at 10 p.m. and reopen at 8 a.m. Employees will be using the overnight hours to deep clean the stores and restock.

On Tuesday and Thursday, the store will only be open to senior citizens and those with chronic health conditions from 7 to 8 a.m. before the everyone else is allowed in. Meijer says on Monday and Wednesday, the 7-8 a.m. hour will be reserved for essential service workers and Meijer employees to shop. They categorize essential service workers as all medical workers, first responders and law enforcement. The company’s gas station convenience stores will close between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. every day, but pay-at-the-pump fuel sales will be available around the clock.
