The Berrien County Health Department is preparing for the area’s first COVID-19 cases. Spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News as of late Thursday afternoon, the county still had no confirmed cases.

“But we do expect that to change,” Conrad said. “So it’s important that people kind of prepare themselves for the eventuality that we know will be the fact that COVID-19 will come to Berrien County. There will be more spread of this virus, and especially as testing is increasing, we know that the case counts are going to continue to increase as well.”

The testing capacity in Berrien County is increasing just like it is statewide. Conrad says between 20 and 30 people have been tested in Berrien County so far. Health officials are only testing patients who have a need. That means people who are displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Those symptoms include cough, fever, and shortness of breath. As for everyone else, Conrad advises them to follow social distancing guidelines.
