Lake Michigan College’s Fab Lab is making personal protective equipment to help local agencies respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Hanson Technology Center Director Chad Dee tells WSJM News the equipment at the makers space has allowed local volunteers to produce face shields.

“We’re hoping to get through about 1,000 of these face shields in our first run, which started yesterday and should run through the rest of this week and next,” Dee said. “We’re getting about 100 to 150 of them done each day, just hoping to help out the community.”

Dee says local makers came together and wondered how they could make a difference. With LMC closed, the Fab Lab was available. The plan is to start shipping out face shields next week.

“We’ve got law enforcement agencies that want them, we’ve got a couple of treatment centers that want them, four hospitals in the area have requested them.”

Dee says if you are part of an agency that would like to request some face shields, you can send an email to FabLab@LakeMichiganCollege.edu. You can also make a donation. In addition to PPE produced by the Fab Lab, the LMC Nursing, Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Tech, CNA and natural sciences departments have donated isolation gowns, masks, and gloves to local organizations.
