Southwestern Michigan College plans to start awarding a new nursing scholarship in the fall of 2021. The college says it’s the McLoughlin Family Scholarship, which was created with an endowment of $50,000 from the McLoughlin Family Foundation in 2017. The endowment came after the foundation made a previous gift of $50,000 for a nursing classroom in the newly expanded SMC nursing building. The $9.6 million project more than doubled SMC’s nursing program’s capacity. In selecting scholarship recipients, preference will be given to spouses or children of employees of K&M Machine Fabricating in Cassopolis. SMC Foundation President Carole Schmidt says the McLoughlin Foundation’s donation is “extremely generous,” and will “provide long-term assistance for numerous students.”
