Lake Michigan College will hold a virtual commencement ceremony on Friday. LMC President Trevor Kubatzke tells WSJM News COVID-19 has scrapped plans for a standard, in-person ceremony, but LMC administrators still wanted to do something the grads will remember.

“A number of us individually videotaped our portions of the commencements such as conferring their degrees,” Kubatzke said. “We also had our student speaker video a message from home for the graduates. A number of our faculty put videos out explaining how proud we are of them. It was our way of giving them something special and memorable.”

The video will go live for the graduates early in the morning.

“It’s all pre-recorded. We individually went into the Mendel Center and stood on the stage where we would normally stand to do our parts.”

Kubatzke says degrees are being awarded this week in 31 areas of study and twelve certificate programs. There will be 413 associate degrees, one bachelor’s degree, and 27 certificates. LMC also took out ads in newspapers to publish the names of all the graduates.
