Chikaming Township Open Lands is seeking the public’s thoughts on what it should prioritize moving into the future. Director Ryan Postema tells us they’ve put up an online survey.

“We’re interested to find out what people think are priorities for land conservation in out area,” Postema said. “So the survey will ask questions about where they live, where they recreate, what parks and preserves they visit, and then what they think is important to preserve.”

Postema says Chikaming Open Lands started as a conservation group in just Chikaming Township, but now protects 18 nature preserves throughout the southern half of Berrien County. He has a few ideas regarding what people would like to protect.

“There’s a lot of popularity just around having hiking trails available where people can go out and walk through the prairie or walk through the forest and just enjoy nature. There’ a lot of bird watching. Wildlife viewing is popular.”

Postema says whether it’s dunes, beaches, forests, or marshland, Chikaming Open Lands wants to learn what you care about. The survey will be up through the end of June, and we have a link to it at WSJM.com.
