Be careful if you’re having a campfire this weekend. There’s an elevated risk of wildfires statewide because of hot, dry weather. Michigan Department of Natural Resources resource protection manager Don Klingler told Michigan News Network this week they’ve had many fires this year.

“We’ve had about 130 fires, and it’s about 600 acres, I believe,” Klinger said. “The most recent and one of concern was one up in the Grayling area that burned 105 acres.”

In dry conditions, the DNR says even heat from a lawn mower or exhaust pipe on an ATV can ignite dry grass. Burn permits are required statewide. To get a burn permit, contact your local government or fire department.
