The South Haven City Council has honored two local musicians who have left their mark on the community over the years.
At Monday’s regular council meeting, Mayor Annie Brown read a proclamation saluting Diane and Lisa Van Deurzen-Otey for their work in the arts.
“Diane and Lisa Van Deurzen-Otey have been enriching the South Haven community through music fellowship and service since 2021 by producing inspiring concerts and hosting a monthly open mic night that welcomes performers and audiences of all backgrounds,” Brown read.
Brown said Diane and Lisa have fostered a more inclusive and informed community by inviting the OutCenter Southwest Michigan to lead workshops on LGBTQ+ awareness while advocating for meaningful observances of Pride Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and Transgender Day of Remembrance. She said they also prepare meals distributed by First Congregational Church.
“Diane and Lisa have faithfully provided love and care and support to church members and South Haven residents during times of illness, trauma, grief, and hardship.”
Brown said Diane and Lisa have provided generosity, compassion, friendship, and music to the City of South Haven. As musicians, the two are a dynamic duo, performing jazz and blues all over the world.
