Michigan State Police have released the final traffic crash data for 2025, showing that traffic fatalities in the state dropped from the year before, but the overall number of crashes was up while fatalities in some specific categories were up.
MSP Lieutenant Kim Vetter tells us the number of overall roadway fatalities in 2025 dropped to 1,065, a 3% decrease from 2024. She says one area that Michigan needs to improve on is crashes involving vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists.
“Bicyclist fatalities increased 21%, from 29 in 2024 to 35 in 2025,” Vetter said.
Pedestrian fatalities increased 18%. Vetter says bicycle-related fatalities may have been up because there are more bicycle riders, and in particular, more E-bike users. She says state police will work to reverse the trend.
“We’re going to put extra patrols in areas where we’re seeing increased crashes and troubled intersections, making sure that we’re paying attention to pedestrians and bicyclists to ensure that they’re following the laws as well to keep them in the safe travel lanes and out of harm’s way as much as possible.”
There was good news. Distracted driving fatalities decreased 32% in 2025 from 2024. Also, drug-involved fatalities decreased 23%, alcohol-involved fatalities were down 14%, and teen fatalities fell by 21%.
Vetter says Michigan State Police continue to urge drivers to slow down, buckle up, and ditch the distractions when behind the wheel.
