He’d rather talk about anything else, but the superintendent of a west Michigan school district says their new high school, now under construction, is designed to protect against an active shooter. Bob Szymoniak, superintendent of Fruitport Community Schools, told Michigan News Network this week the school will have curved hallways to reduce a gunman’s range.

“Should a student be in the hallway and an active shooter start shooting, a student can duck behind this cement barrier, which is adjacent to a classroom door, and so hopefully they could get support from within the classroom to get in that door.”

Szymoniak says the $48 million project will be complete in the summer of 2021. He says he’s been getting a positive response from parents about the school’s design.
