Michigan State Police out of Paw Paw are advising everyone of a new phone scam that spoofs the state police district headquarters phone number. Detective Sergeant Carey Casperson tells WSJM News with this scam, the caller wants the intended victim to believe they are the police.

“That person represents themselves as a lieutenant pr detective with the Michigan State Police and tells the person on the line that their car or a car that is registered to them was impounded, and that drugs were located in that vehicle,” Casperson said.

From there, the caller will try to get financial information out of the would-be victim. Casperson says only one person has actually spoken directly with the scammer, and that person hung up when the scammer started trying to get financial information. He notes that is the right move when someone suspicious has called you.
