The Tulip Time Festival in Holland is another victim of the coronavirus as the festival has been canceled this year. Gwen Auwerda is executive director of Tulip Time and says many volunteers and visitors are in the group most vulnerable to the coronavirus – senior citizens.

“So many of our events are shoulder-to-shoulder, parades, dancing, and all of our event locations hold well more than 50 people and some hold 2,000,” said Auwerda. “So, based on the CDC guidelines, even though we know they’re guidelines and not necessarily a mandate at this point yet, we felt it was in the best interest of the whole community to cancel the festival.”

Auwerda says Tulip Time has a $48 million impact, so it’s a big loss. This is the first time in the event’s 91 year history it’s been canceled. It had been scheduled for May 2-10.
