Vikings 27, Bears 24 – J.J. McCarthy rallies Vikings in 4th quarter of his debut for 27-24 win over Bears
J.J. McCarthy threw two 4th quarter touchdown passes and ran for another in his long-awaited NFL debut, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied for a season-opening 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears. Chicago’s Caleb Williams had his first career rushing touchdown and threw for a score in Ben Johnson’s first game as the Bears’ coach. McCarthy delivered down the stretch after struggling through the first 3 quarters. The Vikings and coach Kevin O’Connell are counting on the former Michigan star after missing last season due to a knee injury, and he delivered when it mattered.

NFL – Ben Johnson loses 1st game as Bears blow 4th quarter lead against Vikings
With Ben Johnson making his debut as Chicago’s head coach, the Bears blew an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter of an ugly 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson’s team was flagged 12 times for 127 yards — including four false start penalties — and his offense was shut down for much of the second half. There were some scattered boos from what was left of the Soldier Field crowd of 58,742 when it was over — a familiar scene after Chicago dropped its last five home games on its way to a 5-12 record last season. The 39-year-old Johnson was hired by Chicago in January after spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

NFL – Bears shut door on team staying in city, says ‘future home’ in Arlington Heights
The Chicago Bears have all but slammed the door on building an enclosed stadium in the city. Team president Kevin Warren wrote in a letter to fans on Monday that the team’s “future home” is in suburban Arlington Heights. The Bears sent the letter hours before their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Warren says leaving Chicago “is not a decision we reached easily.” But he notes that more than 50% of the Bears’ season-ticket holders live within 25 miles of the Arlington Heights site. The team is seeking help from the state legislature to freeze property taxes for large-scale construction projects.

NFL – Lions need to go back to the basics after ugly 27-13 loss to Packers
Coach Dan Campbell thinks it was easy to see what went wrong for the Detroit Lions in their 27-13 season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. Fixing it, though, is going to be much tougher. The Lions didn’t force a turnover or record a sack and scored their only touchdown with 55 seconds left in the game. The running game finished with 46 yards on 22 carries and didn’t get into the end zone. Next up is an NFC North matchup against the Chicago Bears and new head coach Ben Johnson, the architect of Detroit’s high-flying offense during Campbell’s reign.

NFL – Barry Sanders pushes cholesterol awareness one year after heart attack
Barry Sanders is urging people to talk with their physicians about their cardiovascular health. The Detroit Lions great suffered a heart attack nearly 15 months ago. The 57-year-old Sanders woke up with a burning sensation in his chest last year on Father’s Day and ultimately drove himself to a hospital. He says he’s on a good treatment plan now. Sanders says people should ask their doctor about their LDL-C cholesterol numbers because so many are impacted by heart disease. Sanders played 10 seasons for the Lions, retiring in 1999 when he was within striking distance of the NFL career rushing record.

Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson homered and Bryce Elder had his fourth straight strong outing as the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Monday night. The Cubs lost for the fourth time in five games. Olson went 2 for 4 and hit his 23rd home run of the season in the eighth inning. Elder (7-9) pitched one-run ball for 6 1/3 innings, with five hits, a walk and six strikeouts. Tyler Kinley worked a perfect eighth for his 13th straight scoreless appearance for the Braves.

Unrivaled women’s basketball league now valued at $340M million
Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart’s 3-on-3 women’s basketball league, Unrivaled, has gained significant investment from big names in sports. On Monday, the league announced a valuation of $340 million after closing its Series B investment round led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Investors include Serena Williams’ venture capital firm, Trae Young, and others. Unrivaled, founded in 2023, offers top players a U.S. offseason option while boosting their WNBA incomes. The league’s first season ended in March with high viewership and sold-out games. Unrivaled plans to start its second season in January 2026.

NCAAFB – Michigan’s Sherrone Moore says Biff Poggi will lead team during suspension
Michigan coach Sherrone Moore says associate head coach Biff Poggi will lead the team during his two-game suspension. Moore made the announcement Monday, less than a week before he is to miss a home game against Central Michigan and a road trip to Nebraska. The second-year coach was suspended for two games this season as part of self-imposed sanctions for NCAA violations related to a sign-stealing investigation. The NCAA added a third game to the suspension, keeping Moore off the sideline for next year’s opener against Western Michigan.

Everyone seems to agree: Spitting on somebody else is just wrong. But it keeps happening
Inter Miami’s Luis Suárez further damaged his reputation. Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles cost himself the chance to play in a season-opening game. Florida’s Brendan Bett gave South Florida a 15-yard gift on its drive that decided its win over the Gators. Their transgression: spitting. In the span of seven days from last Sunday through this past Saturday, there were three high-profile spitting incidents — all immediately and universally reviled, actions the likes of which teammates of the guilty parties couldn’t even justify.

NBA – NBA player’s sister fatally shot, her boyfriend charged with murder
The sister of Minnesota Timberwolves player Naz Reid was fatally shot at a New Jersey apartment complex by her boyfriend. Twenty-nine-year-old Shaquille Green has been charged with murder. Ocean County prosecutors say Jackson police went to the Paragon apartment complex around 11 a.m. Saturday, after receiving reports of shots fired. They soon found 28-year-old Toraya Reid unresponsive. Officers also saw Green running down a nearby road, and he was soon taken into custody without incident. Prosecutors say Toraya Reid and Green had been in “a dating relationship” but did not provide further details. They didn’t know whether Green had retained an attorney.
