Yaxel Lendeborg says Kentucky offered him $7 million to $9 million before he chose to play at Michigan for about one-third of the compensation. It has worked out for him and the Wolverines. He was named the Big Ten Player of the Year as the top player for the one-seeded Wolverines, who will open the NCAA Tournament on Thursday and have a shot to end it with the school’s second national championship and first since 1989. The 23-year-old Lendeborg is an example of what’s potentially positive about the transfer portal, earning the opportunity to level up.

Patrick Kane scored twice for Detroit to move into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time goals list for players born in the U.S. and lead the Red Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. Kane has 504 career goals. He trails Mike Modano, Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick. Kane also has 1,383 career points in 1,355 games as the highest-scoring American-born player. Emmitt Finnie, Moritz Seider and Dominik Shine scored goals and Alex DeBrincat had three assists for the Red Wings. Morgan Frost scored and Matt Coronato had a goal and an assist for the Flames.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to a 3-year contract with forward prospect Sacha Boisvert
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a three-year contract with Sacha Boisvert, one of the team’s top prospects. The Blackhawks announced the entry-level deal with the Canadian forward on Monday. The contract carries a $974,167 salary-cap hit and runs through the 2027-28 season. Boisvert, who turns 20 on Tuesday, could make his NHL debut this week. The rebuilding Blackhawks host Minnesota on Tuesday night and visit the Wild on Thursday. They also host Colorado on Friday. Boisvert was selected by the Blackhawks with the No. 18 pick in the 2024 draft.

Giddey is third in the NBA with 12 triple-doubles this season. He trails Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Jalen Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks. Giddey is averaging career highs with 17.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game. Matas Buzelis led the Bulls with 29 points. He had five 3-pointers. Cedric Coward led the Grizzlies with 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Memphis is 3-15 in its last 18 games.

NBA – NBA owners work on expansion again next week with Vegas and Seattle the targets
The NBA may move a step closer to adding teams in Seattle and Las Vegas next week when expansion will be again discussed by the league’s board of governors, two people with knowledge of the matter tell The Associated Press. It is expected that a vote on whether to go forward with those two cities as the sole targets for expansion at this time takes place next week as well, the people said. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because those were not released publicly. It would take a three-fourths majority of governors to go forward.

Ronald Acuña Jr., Maikel Garcia and Luis Arraez hit run-scoring, two-out singles in a seventh-inning rally that led Venezuela over Italy 4-2 and into its first World Baseball Classic championship game. Venezuela overcame a 2-0, fourth-inning deficit after climbing out of a three-run hole to beat defending champion Japan in a quarterfinal and reached the final for the first time after losing to South Korea in its only previous semifinal appearance in 2009. It meets the United States for the title on Tuesday night and appears likely to start Eduardo Rodríguez against the Americans’ Nolan McLean.
NFL – Jets agree to trade QB Justin Fields to Chiefs to serve as Mahomes’ backup
The New York Jets have agreed to a trade that will send quarterback Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, a person familiar with the deal has told The Associated Press. The Jets will receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2027 for Fields and pick up $7 million of his guaranteed $10 million salary for this upcoming season, the person told the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams didn’t announce the trade. The deal, first reported by ESPN, is pending a physical. The 27-year-old Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with New York last March. Fields was benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor in November.
NFL – Darius Slay, a six-time Pro Bowl CB who won a Super Bowl, is retiring
Longtime NFL cornerback Darius Slay is retiring. The six-time Pro Bowler announced his decision in a post on Instagram, saying he’s ready to turn the page. A second-round pick out of Mississippi State in the 2013 draft, Slay led the NFL with eight interceptions in the 2017 season, the same year he made the lone All-Pro team of his career. Slay spent seven seasons with Detroit, then five more with the Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl after the 2024 season. Slay played 10 games for Pittsburgh in 2025 before being released. Buffalo signed him off waivers, but he declined to report, citing family reasons.
WNBA – Another marathon WNBA CBA negotiation drags past 3:30 a.m. with no deal done
Another marathon negotiating session between the WNBA and its players union didn’t end with a new collective bargaining agreement. For the seventh consecutive day the two sides met for over 12 hours and while they said progress was being made heading into Monday’s negotiationing session, there was still work that needed to be done when the sides ended discussions for the night around 3:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday morning. Revenue sharing continues to be the big sticking point between the sides.
MHSAA – Lilly Williams of Howell High School named Michigan’s Miss Basketball
Lilly Williams of Howell High School has been named Michigan’s Miss Basketball. Williams won the award on Monday. The 6-foot-5 center will play at Michigan State next season. She is ranked No. 32 overall in the nation and had offers from Boston College, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
