Pirates 2, Cubs 1 – Henry Davis slugs late go-ahead homer as Pirates send Cubs to a 9th straight loss in 2-1 victory
Henry Davis hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Davis turned on a 91 mph cutter from Cubs reliever Trent Thornton and sent it 427 feet over the fence in left field for his fourth homer of the season. Pittsburgh’s bullpen did the rest. Wilber Dotel earned his first big-league win with three innings of scoreless relief. Michael Busch homered for Chicago, but couldn’t stop the Cubs from dropping their ninth straight game, the club’s longest skid since a 10-game slide in 2022.

White Sox 3, Twins 1 – Munetaka Murakami homers as the White Sox cool off the Twins with a 3-1 win
Munetaka Murakami homered, Anthony Kay pitched six sparkling innings and the Chicago White Sox stopped Minnesota’s four-game win streak with a 3-1 victory over the Twins. Drew Romo also connected for Chicago in the opener of a seven-game homestand. Rikuu Nishida singled in the fourth for his first hit in a successful big league debut. The White Sox have won seven in a row against the Twins for the first time since an eight-game streak in 1995. Brooks Lee homered for Minnesota, which had won six of seven overall. Zebby Matthews allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.

Tennis – Heat wave at French Open impacts the clay courts and sends fans to sprinklers
Tennis players at the French Open say they haven’t experienced conditions this hot at Roland Garros since the 2024 Paris Olympics. And the Olympics were held in July and August. Temperatures for the opening two days of the clay-court Grand Slam have soared to 33 degrees C (91 F). That’s far beyond normal for late May in the French capital. And it’s forecast to stay that way for the entire first week. Besides making it uncomfortable for fans and players alike the sultry conditions have also created faster conditions on court. Russian-born Australian player Daria Kasatkina says “I don’t remember the last time it was so hot at Roland Garros.”

NCAALAC – Princeton beats Notre Dame 16-9 for NCAA men’s lacrosse championship
Chad Palumbo scored all four of his goals in the first half, Colin Burns also had a hat trick, and Princeton beat Notre Dame 16-9 for its first NCAA men’s lacrosse championship since 2001. Top-seeded Princeton (17-2) won its 12th straight game this season to improve to 7-2 in NCAA championship games. No. 2 seed Notre Dame (13-3) was in the final for the third time in four years, with titles in 2023 and ‘24. The Irish also had championship losses in 2010 and ’14. Princeton trailed 3-0 before scoring the last 11 goals of the first half. Palumbo had a hand in the Tigers’ first three goals. Then he scored his 48th goal of the season with 22 seconds left before halftime.

Indy500 – Felix Rosenqvist collects a record $4.34 million from highest purse in history
Swedish driver Felix Rosenqvist earned a record $4.34 million payout after winning his first Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. That topped Alex Palou’s total from last year by more than $500,000. The total purse, $30,906,400, was also a record, organizers announced before Monday’s formal victory celebration dinner. That total increased nearly $11 million over last year’s previous all-time high. Rosenqvist made a daring, perfectly-time pass of David Malukas in the closing yards, beating Malukas across the yard of bricks by 0.0233 seconds — the closest finish in race history. The previous record came in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043 seconds. Malukas finished second for a second straight year on the Brickyard’s 2.5-mile oval.
