The weather is heating up around southwest Michigan, and pet owners are being reminded to keep their dogs and cats safe. Berrien County Animal Control Director Val Grimes says if your animal is used to the air conditioning, keep it inside. For those dogs outdoors, be sure they’re hydrated.

“They have to be able to have their mouth open,” Grimes told WSJM. “At any time, do not put anything around their mouth. No muzzles or anything like that, and they do not sweat, like people do. So, be sure that they have plenty of water, cold water.”

Grimes says you should also be careful with cats, keeping them indoors if that’s possible. She also recommends that joggers leave their pooch at home in the high heat unless it’s after 6 p.m. A heatwave is expected to move into the region in the next few days.
