A report from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund shows that the number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States this year is up over last year. As of July 20, 67 federal, state, and local officers died on the job, an 8% increase from the same time last year. The Memorial Fund’s Craig Floyd says people need to work with law enforcement to build safer communities.

Law enforcement is clearly focused on the top priority, which is where trust has been lost, to restore that trust, to strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and the citizens that they serve,” Floyd said.

In Michigan, three officers have died this year, including Berrien County Courthouse security officers Joseph Zangaro and Ron Kienzle. They were shot after a prisoner grabbed a deputy’s gun while trying to escape. A Branch County deputy sheriff was also killed this year when he was thrown from his horse during a Memorial Day parade.
