The Michigan Court of Appeals has overturned a Berrien County Trial Court ruling allowing sheriff’s deputies to train at a shooting range in Coloma Township. Sheriff Paul Bailey halted all shooting at the facility on Angling Road Wednesday morning.

“We had people on the range qualifying, but the minute I read the ruling, I shut it down immediately,” Bailey told WSJM News.

Sheriff Bailey tells WSJM News his deputies need to qualify for firearms use. So, he’s looking for another shooting range

“We’ll have to find a place that we can fit into and hopefully not bother any of the surrounding residents,” Bailey said.

Businesses near the Coloma range have been suing ever since the facility’s opening about ten years ago. They argue an open air shooting range near them is a disruption. Bailey says the Berrien County Board of Commissioners will have to decide whether to appeal.
