During this National Diabetes Awareness Month, doctors are reminding everyone of the warning signs of the disease, as well as how you can avoid it. Vascular surgeon Dr. Gary Gibbons tells our newsroom 29 million Americans have diabetes, including almost 800,000 in Michigan. Lifestyle choices can affect whether you get it.

“Diabetes is actually going up 1% per year,” Gibbons said. “Probably the greatest two reasons is faulty diet and lack of exercise.”

The CDC says diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It kills nearly 80,000 people every year.
