SMC Breaks Ground On Nursing Expansion

Southwestern Michigan College has broken ground on its new nursing facility expansion. SMC President Dr. David Mathews tells WSJM News dignitaries gathered Wednesday to celebrate the beginning of $9.6 million in work to roughly double the size and capacity of the nursing building.

“We are adding the very latest in nursing simulation labs which use robotic patients which can simulate all sorts of procedures and disorders,” Mathews said. “We are putting in twice as many skills labs, and in addition to that, we’ll still have other allied health programs.”

On hand Wednesday were Michigan Budget Director Al Pscholka and state Senator John Proos, who both helped get the project rolling. Mathews tells us the expansion is in response to a demand for nurses all over the country. The project will be complete and the facility up and running in January of 2019.
