State Senator John Proos is hailing news that the Michigan organ donor registry now includes more than 60% of adult state residents. Proos tells WSJM News an effort by Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to increase the number of people signed up has made a big difference.

“We’re already over 60% of the Michigan residents who are motorists on our roads,” Proos said. “They now have the organ donation heart, the gift of life heart, on their licenses, reminding all of us how much we can be beneficial to others should the unthinkable happen to us.”

Proos says a recent state law requiring everyone who renews their license to be asked if they want to sign up has helped. In January of 2011, only 27% of eligible Michigan residents were registered organ donors. Proos urges everyone to sign up for the registry.
