The Michigan Senate this week approved a resolution co-sponsored by state Senator Tonya Schuitmaker to salute the women who hold elected office in the state. The resolution declares March 19, next Monday, as Women in Public Office Day. Schuitmaker, who is the second woman in the state’s history to serve as president pro tempore of the Senate, said she hopes the move will encourage more women to run for office. She tells us the number of women holding elected office in Michigan has been steadily increasing for several years, with 2018 being a major breakout year. She urges more young women to aspire to holding elected office so they can make a difference in their communities and in their state.
