The city of St. Joseph could get a state grant to help residents replace lead water lines near their homes. At Monday’s city commission meeting, St. Joe Public Works Director Tom MacDonald said there’s a new state program offering grants of up to $1 million to improve water quality. St. Joe could reach out to residents if it gets a grant.

“With grant funding, if we were successful, we would replace — or at least invite the homeowners — to have the private portion from the water shutoff to the house replaced with grant funding,” MacDonald said.

MacDonald said there are a couple of different ways the grant could be used, and he thinks both plans for lead water line replacement are solid enough to put St. Joe in the running for a grant. The city commission gave him the green light to go ahead and apply.
