The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is reminding everyone of what the rules are for shooting off fireworks now that the Fourth of July is just about here. Chief Deputy Robert Boyce tells WSJM News, first of all, there are statewide limits on when someone can use fireworks.

“They’re allowed by Michigan statute to shoot them the day before, the day of, and the day after a nationally-recognized holiday,” Boyce said. “So, technically, if they’re shooting them off now, they’re in violation.”

And if you are in violation of fireworks rules?

“You’d get a citation, and it would be up to a 90 day misdemeanor,” Boyce said. “Fines and costs are normally what’s assessed.”

Boyce tells us most local units of government will have rules for what time of night you have to stop using fireworks. As for which fireworks are legal, he says you can be confident yours are by seeing the license of your fireworks dealer. It should be on display. You can find many state fireworks regulations right here.
