The campaign of Congressman Fred Upton has indicated it is interested in scheduling debates between Upton and Democratic opponent Matt Longjohn, although it’s not being more specific than that. Longjohn last week challenged Upton to six debates, one in each of the district’s counties. After we contacted the Upton campaign to ask for a response, we were sent a statement attributed to campaign manager Nate Henschel. It says the campaign “will participate in public forums, discussions, and debates surrounding the issues. We plan on working with our opponents to ensure voters can see and hear for themselves our contrasting visions for the future of Southwest Michigan.” The Longjohn campaign says Upton called for debates after he secured the Republican nomination for the Sixth District seat this month.
