U.S. Senator Gary Peters of Michigan says John McCain always treated everyone with the utmost respect. Peters told Michigan News Network Monday that’s what he will remember about his Republican colleague from Arizona. McCain who died Saturday from brain cancer.

“As the junior senator from Michigan and as a member of the Armed Services Committee, he would reach out to me,” Peters said. “He always wanted to solicit my opinion and wanted to work with me to make sure that all perspectives were brought forward in the work of the committee.”

McCain was 81. The Vietnam War hero ran unsuccessfully for president in 2000, losing the Republican nomination to future President George W. Bush. McCain ran again in 2008, when he was the GOP nominee and lost to President Barack Obama.
