What do you think of the roads in Michigan? Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer pledged to fix the roads during her campaign, but she’ll be working with a Republican controlled House and Senate. Republican Lee Chatfield is the new Speaker of the House come January. He spoke with Michigan News Network about road issues.

“I’m happy to say that this last cycle, under Governor Snyder in this last budget year, we gave our roads the highest funding we’ve ever given them in the history of our state, but we can do more and we can do better,” Chatfield said. “I think if we’re going to come together, building a relationship is essential because much of the reason people are frustrated with Washington is because they can’t get things done, and they can’t come to a consensus.”

Chatfield says there will be differences. He says we have a road funding problem when we pay three taxes at the pump, but not all three go to fix our roads. He thinks they can get more road funding, but says House Republicans aren’t keen on any tax hikes to make it happen.
