When you’re buying gifts for loved ones this holiday season, Michigan State Police suggest you consider the gift of preparedness. Spokesperson Dale George tells WSJM News everyone should have an emergency kit in their home to make it through a disaster. The kit should include a gallon of water per person per day for three days, a weather radio, flashlights and batteries, and a first aid kit. George says you should also have an emergency kit in your car.

“That would include having jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, maybe some warm clothing in your car,” George said. “Sometimes, we would suggest having a shovel just in case if you’re expecting there to be a lot of snow, an ice scraper, and a charged cell phone and a car charger.”

Michigan State Police have five gift recommendations this year. George says they are the emergency kit, an LED emergency hand crank lantern, a mobile phone battery charger, a water filtration bottle, and disaster preparedness books for kids. Michigan State Police have a guide for being ready at Michigan.gov/MIReady.
