After a weekend closure, Secretary of State offices and self-serve kiosks are open today after a computer upgrade. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson says the old system was based on 1960s mainframe computer technology.

“You’ll be able to order and replace more licence plates online, order replacement tabs and a recreation tab (along with) snowmobile, boat registration, and auto dealers, mechanics and others can do many more things online as well,” said Benson. “On top of that, if you go to a kiosk you’ll be able to do more services, including your watercraft renewals.”

She says people should notice faster service right away.

“In the offices themselves, transactions will go more quickly because essentially the computers will be running faster. As a result, we’ll start seeing the effect in lower wait times as these services get implemented,” said Benson, adding it gets her closer to the 30-minute guarantee she campaigned on.

Benson says since they appreciate the patience of customers, late fees will be waived for transactions with expiration dates from now through March 2nd.
