Tax Filing Deadline Quickly Approaching

The clock is ticking if you’ve yet to start or file your taxes with the deadline looming Monday night. IRS spokesman Luis Garcia works in the Detroit office and says if you haven’t started and normally prepare your returns yourself, the forms are a little different this year. However, he says they should be more simple to do and adds a lot of people who normally itemize could find it’s easier to take the larger standard deduction and not have to be bothered by all the other details they’ve kept track of.

“The vast majority of tax filers, it’s even simpler because they don’t even see those forms,” says Garcia. “They’re either using a paid professional or tax software.”

He says while the tax code changes haven’t resulted in an increase in calls from confused taxpayers, they have noticed an increase across the country in people filing for extensions. Doing so extends your deadline to file by six months, but does not change the fact that if you owe money and don’t pay it on April 15, you’ll start accruing interest and late fees.
