Congressman Fred Upton is working with other members of the House to come up with a plan that could lower prescription drug costs. He tells WSJM News House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week issued a plan of her own without seeking input from Republicans.

“We’ve had some working groups on both sides of the aisle, but if you want to get something done, you’ve got to work together with divided government, in particular,” Upton said.

Upton, along with all 24 Republican members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued a joint statement calling on Pelosi to bring up bipartisan ideas to lower drug prices. Pelosi’s plan would allow the government to negotiate the prices for some of the most expensive drugs in Medicare and the private market each year. The 24 Republicans said in their letter the idea was “a socialist proposal.” Upton says bipartisan hearings could begin this week that could lead to a plan that might actually be approved.
