State Senator Kim LaSata has announced the winner of her district-wide student essay contest. She says Kayden Jones, a sixth grader at Sturgis Middle School, has taken top honors. The theme of the contest was “What would you do if you were a senator to make Southwest Michigan better?” Jones wrote he would work to improve special education. He cited his own challenges at school as a reason for wanting to help other students in similar situations. As the contest winner, Jones now gets to spend a day with LaSata at the Capitol in Lansing as a junior senator. LaSata says picking a winner out of more than 80 submissions was difficult, but Kayden’s entry stood out the most.
