Minimum wage in Michigan is going up tomorrow. Currently $9.45 an hour, it will rise to $9.65 on January 1 and up to $9.87 on New Year’s Day 2021. For tipped employees, the wage will go from $3.59 to $3.67 tomorrow and up to $3.75 in 2021. The changes were approved the Legislature during the lame duck session in 2018 after passing and later amending a citizen petition that would have boosted the minimum wage to $10 and to $12 in 2022. The $12 level won’t be reached until 2030 under the changes.

The pass-and-amend action prompted a lawsuit, but the Michigan Supreme Court earlier this month steered clear of intervening after critics sued, saying lawmakers violated the state constitution. Justices wrote they were “not persuaded that granting the requests would be an appropriate exercise of the Court’s discretion.”
