The Michigan Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be extra cautious going into the week with the time change. MDOT spokesperson Michael Frezell tells WSJM News everyone is losing an hour.

“People are going to be a little bit more tired when they go into work on Monday,” Frezell said. “It’ll be a little bit darker in the morning, so at that time we really want people to pay attention for pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists out on the road when they’re travelling.”

Frezell says pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists should wear bright, reflective clothing to be seen more easily, and those behind the wheel need to pay close attention and eliminate distractions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 6,200 pedestrian deaths and 857 bicyclist deaths resulting from traffic crashes in 2018. Those were increases of 3.4% and 6.3%, respectively, from the previous year.
