With Congressman Fred Upton seeking an 18th term in the U.S. House, he tells WSJM News he waited a bit longer than usual to announce his campaign this year. He says he wanted to make sure it would be right for loved ones.

“Really, for me, it was family,” Upton said. “I’m a new grandpa. It was a tough pregnancy for my daughter and her newborn son. That was number one, and I’m thinking about his future and their future as we look down the road, and I wanted to make sure that ended up in a good spot before we actually put together thoughts about whether I should run for another term or not.”

With Upton’s daughter and her baby now in good shape, Upton says he decided to throw his hat in the ring. Upton says with so much dysfunction in Washington, he wants to be a part of the solution by working in a bipartisan way to get things done. He also says he wants to usher version 2.0 of his 21st Century Cures Legislation through the process. He thinks it will take at least another year.
